Mongolia Czech Republic

ULAANBAATAR / PRAGUE — Mongolian and Czech representatives discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in technology, renewable energy, data centers, agricultural machinery and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises. Meetings held in the Czech Republic on October 7 also covered ways to help Mongolian startups enter European markets, participate in research and innovation programmes, and strengthen partnerships between business organisations in the two countries.

A Mongolian delegation led by B. Zandankhuu, head of the National Investment and Trade Agency, met Martin Basta, deputy director of the Department of Economic and Science Diplomacy at the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other relevant officials. The discussions focused on opportunities for economic, scientific and innovation cooperation. The meetings were organised with the support of the Embassy of the Czech Republic.

Opportunities in renewable energy, data centers and technology

The discussions covered renewable energy, data centers, agriculture, machinery and equipment, and tourism. The Mongolian side also considered how Czech technologies and expertise could be adapted for domestic needs.

These sectors could open up different opportunities for businesses in Mongolia. Renewable energy cooperation could include technology, engineering solutions and equipment, while data centers would involve digital infrastructure and information technology services. In agriculture, the two sides could explore mechanisation, equipment and solutions to improve production efficiency.

However, no official information has been released indicating that the meetings resulted in specific investment commitments, project approvals or procurement contracts. These areas should therefore be regarded as potential avenues for cooperation rather than confirmed investments.

Mongolian startups to explore participation in European innovation programmes

The Mongolian delegation also met representatives of Technology Centre Prague to discuss support for startups seeking to enter European markets, access to financing and cooperation in research and innovation.

According to information released by the Czech organisation on October 8, one potential area of cooperation is support for Mongolian organisations and researchers seeking to participate in the European Union’s “Horizon Europe” research and innovation programme. Technology Centre Prague could develop training tailored to Mongolia’s needs, and the two sides are also considering delivering the training online.

The two sides also agreed to hold further discussions on preparing a memorandum of understanding, exploring opportunities for Mongolian organisations to participate in European research and innovation programmes, and planning specific activities related to startups and professional training. This represents an initial step towards defining how cooperation could be implemented, rather than simply exchanging views. However, there is currently no basis to say that the memorandum has been finalised or that funding has been secured.

Focus on helping small and medium-sized businesses reach export markets

During a meeting with representatives of the Czech Association of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Crafts, the Mongolian delegation exchanged views on improving business competitiveness, expanding export opportunities and supporting companies seeking access to international markets.

An important topic was “Aid for Trade”, an initiative aimed at supporting trade development. Mongolia is exploring the possibility of participating in the initiative and implementing related programmes in cooperation with the Small and Medium Enterprises Agency.

According to the National Investment and Trade Agency, the two sides agreed to strengthen ties between organisations supporting small and medium-sized businesses and jointly develop projects and programmes to expand export opportunities for Mongolian companies. Specific funding amounts, the number of participating businesses and the launch date of any programme have not yet been announced.

European markets remain important for wool and cashmere exports

Mongolia-Czech trade cooperation is not limited to new technology and innovation. In a June 3 statement, the Embassy of Mongolia in the Czech Republic said the two sides had discussed ways to introduce and promote Mongolian wool and cashmere products in the Czech market, as well as opportunities for Mongolian producers to participate in trade fairs and commercial events held in the Czech Republic.

The ninth meeting of the Mongolia-Czech Intergovernmental Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation was also held in Prague in May 2026. The embassy said the two sides had agreed in that framework to establish working groups on mineral exploration, mining and processing, and research into rare earth elements. These developments indicate that cooperation between the two countries could expand across technology, processing industries and exports of agricultural products.

Next step: turning cooperation into projects and partnerships

Recent meetings between Mongolia and the Czech Republic show interest in expanding cooperation in technology, innovation and small and medium-sized businesses. However, a clearer assessment of the commercial results will require confirmation of whether memorandums are signed, joint projects launched and what support Mongolian companies will receive in entering European markets.

If the two sides can turn training, technology transfer, export support and research and innovation programmes into concrete initiatives, Mongolian startups and small and medium-sized businesses could gain new partnerships, financing opportunities and greater capacity to compete in international markets. For now, however, these remain areas of cooperation under consideration and do not represent news of a new investment agreement.
